Sri Lanka is strengthening tourism development in the Northern Province with an investment of Rs.131.02 million aimed at improving tourism infrastructure across the district of Jaffna. The initiative is expected to enhance visitor experiences, improve accessibility to key attractions, and support sustainable tourism growth in the region.
The investment reflects the government’s ongoing strategy to diversify Sri Lanka’s tourism destinations and promote emerging regions beyond traditional tourism hubs.
Sri Lanka Enhances Key Tourist Attractions in Jaffna
The project also focuses on developing tourism potential across the islands within the Kayts Division, an area known for its scenic coastal environment and cultural heritage. Infrastructure improvements such as the renovation of boat piers in Analaitivu and Kayts are expected to strengthen connectivity and facilitate easier travel to these island destinations.
Improving Cultural and Coastal Sites
Another important development area is the historic Keerimalai coastal region in Tellippalai, a site of religious and cultural importance. Planned improvements include the removal of coastal rock formations that obstruct traditional rituals performed by Hindu devotees, as well as enhancements to visitor facilities to accommodate increasing tourist numbers.
Meanwhile, restoration work is also planned for Kankesanthurai Beach, where a children’s park damaged by sea erosion will be repaired and upgraded. These improvements aim to ensure the beach remains a safe and enjoyable recreational space for families and visitors.
Strengthening Regional Tourism Growth
Tourism authorities believe that improving infrastructure in Northern Province will help unlock the region’s tourism potential. Jaffna has increasingly attracted travellers seeking authentic cultural experiences, unique cuisine, and unspoiled coastal landscapes.
Investments in infrastructure are expected to stimulate local economic activity by supporting small businesses, encouraging private-sector investment, and creating new employment opportunities in tourism and hospitality. As Sri Lanka continues to rebuild and expand its tourism industry, initiatives such as this Rs.131 million development programme are expected to play a key role in positioning Jaffna as an emerging tourism destination within the country
